Kate and James Harrison were keen to find a new home where they could put down roots and have the space needed to accommodate their growing family.
With their two-and-a-half-year-old son, and another baby on the way the family were looking for a home to work for them on a number of levels. The family needed a home that was within a good commute of the capital, be within catchment of good schools and have a community environment for their children to grow up in.
“Our current property is a three-bedroom traditional terrace but with a new baby on the way and a new job for my husband, we felt that the time was right to move,” says Kate. “I really like period properties so a new build wasn’t really something I would look for but the estate agent mentioned that it might work for us. James wasn’t keen at first but as soon as I downloaded the brochure and we started to look at it properly, we were both very eager to find out more.”
In fact, the couple were only the second people to view the three-bedroom show home and said yes straightaway. “We both really liked the fact that it is a small development and it is backed by green belt land so it won’t be a case that more development will spring up over the years. The design of each property is unique, which gives it character, and it feels like a lovely place to bring up our children. The location is perfect for us and we have already enrolled our son into nursery and there is a lovely primary school just down the road,” explains Kate.
Never having bought a new build before, the couple initially asked around to find out about other people’s experiences as well as undertaking their own research. “The response was really positive and we found that Higgins Homes have a really good reputation, which has mirrored our own experience. Throughout the process, the sales staff have been very kind and considerate and allowed us the space to get on with the process and we were able to work together to make it as easy as possible.”
Although the couple were not originally intending to buy a new build, the fact that the home will be totally ready to move in to has been a huge advantage, especially with a toddler and a baby on the way. “Some of the properties we viewed really did need quite a lot of work and that would have been difficult in our situation,” adds Kate. “The no-hassle factor was huge but so was the fact that the home really has everything on our wish list.
“There are some lovely wow factors that we didn’t have in our previous property. The kitchen/diner is going to be the real hub of the home and perfect for socialising. Our old kitchen was a galley design so I’m really looking forward to having this additional space. There’s a nod to the traditional design that we really like too with its double frontage and fireplace in the lounge and there are also practical factors too. Having a downstairs toilet is ideal with children and because James’ family is from Scotland, now when they visit, they can have their own bedroom and bathroom, which will make their stay more comfortable.”
With the property being over three floors, it also gives the family flexibility to use the space in many different ways and can adapt over time as the children grow and their needs change. “We are not looking to make any changes at the moment because everything is so beautifully put together,” concludes Kate. “Perhaps in the future we will convert the garage to give the children an additional den/living area where they can relax with their friends but for now we are just looking forward to enjoying the home and garden and welcoming our new baby.”
