How often have you played that game of looking through estate agents’ windows at your dream home and imagining what it would be like to actually live there? Richard and Issy, both aged 29, decided to browse round their local borough of Islington to get some inspiration for when the time came that they could move up the housing ladder.
“We were not originally looking to seriously move,” explains Issy. “We were just browsing at houses that we may one day aspire to live in. The Higgins Homes development was open on the weekend and we lived nearby so just decided to have a look.”
The development that the couple visited was called Nord One, an urban terrace of just five contemporary designer houses minutes from central Islington. The houses are built for modern day living, which appealed to the couple as they explain: “We loved the light and spacious open-plan design, especially the living room, dining and kitchen area on the ground floor. The high quality finishing and modern materials also avoid the problems associated with many of the surrounding Georgian houses that have single glazing and poorer eco-credentials.”
Although the couple fell in love with the property, they hadn’t even put their flat on the market so didn’t think their dream could become a reality. However, thanks to Higgins Homes’ part-exchange deal they were quickly and easily able to secure their home. “We first saw the property in February, made our offer in March, exchanged in April and moved in May,” says Richard. “All pretty quick given we had not given any real thought to moving before seeing the property itself.”
The couple part-exchanged their two-bedroom flat in Clerkenwell, which then enabled them to move hassle-free. “Higgins offered us a fair market value for our flat, asking three local agents to value the property and offering us the average,” says Richard.
Nord One is located in Barnsbury, a green enclave in the heart of Islington. Although the homes are within walking distance of all that Islington has to offer, including its vibrant mix of bistros, boutiques and bars, the neighbourhood has a close, community feel.
“The homes are at an entrance to the park, which gives us a lovely expanse of green space to appreciate,” they explain. “And we also enjoy having the buzz of Upper Street on our doorstep. We both work in finance and now we can walk to the City to our offices as well as enjoy good transport links throughout the Capital.”
The couple chose their four-bedroom home for the location combined with the smart interior spaces. “There is a separate en-suite guest living area at the top of the house with its own terrace and the well-proportioned living space on the ground floor is synonymous with how we would envisage living and entertaining. The lighting in each room has been well thought through and adds an extra element of quality throughout.”
The interior spaces at Nord One showcase natural materials to create a luxurious and contemporary finish. Attention to detail throughout the homes are evident with smart touches such as bathrooms featuring bespoke concealed storage and heated mirrors and kitchens from London designers Urban Myth combining Terra Oak with soft pearl grey doors and appliances from leading brands. The combined effect is sophisticated and smart and ideal for modern day urban dwellers.
