For many people, buying a house is a long, drawn out process. Countless viewings, comparing what’s on the market and trips to estate agents make buying a property one of life’s most stressful activities.
Not so for Ted Mager from Amsterdam and his partner Sjoerd Koopman who have been renting in Clerkenwell for the past year and a half. Ted is a senior manager at a tech company and both he and his partner work in central London.
“We weren’t seriously looking at homes to buy but had decided that it was probably time to get on the property ladder in the UK in the near future,” says Ted. “We were out for a stroll and came across the East Central development and decided to take a look. When we discovered it offered open views over the city we were really sold. In fact, we didn’t look anywhere else.”
The Higgins Homes development comprises just 35 stunning apartments and penthouses. Located in one of London’s most artistic communities, the architecture of the development appeals to those with a strong sense of design. Built from stone and glass, the cutting-edge, contemporary development blends in seamlessly with the bohemian style of the area.
“Clerkenwell is a creative community and that means all the services such as shops, cafes and restaurants meet the needs of the residents offering a great environment to live,” says Ted. “We definitely wanted something brand new and because East Central is not overwhelmingly large we feel that we will really be able to get to know our neighbours and it will be a pleasant community to live in.
“Clerkenwell really suits our needs; I can walk into work in just 30 minutes, we are close to a tube and because we do a lot of international travelling, it is ideal that Heathrow airport is so accessible. From our home we can visit the local cafes, market and butchers and if we want a further choice of restaurants then Angel is just down the road,” adds Ted.
Being centrally located was very important for Ted and Sjoerd but they didn’t want anything that felt noisy or crowded. The apartments at East Central overlook the playing fields which helps the whole development feel peaceful and relaxed.
Although the house buying process in Amsterdam is very different to the UK, Ted didn’t encounter any complications. “I’ve heard about people being gazumped and loosing their dream home so I was very keen for this not to happen to us. Buying through Higgins Homes was very easy and the process has been straightforward.”
The couple will take possession of the property in the early summer and are looking forward to stamping their own style onto their home. “My partner is a really keen cook so we are adapting the kitchen so it is completely chef-friendly and has everything he needs. Apart from a little bit of decorating, we really don’t need to do anything. The home is extremely light and airy thanks to the numerous windows and the fixtures and fittings are all very good quality.”
