The festive season has begun and the calendar of events now on in London will take us joyfully through right to the start of 2016. As is the case every year, London has plenty to offer those who are looking to make the most of the run up to Christmas, whether you’re interested in getting stuck in to some seasonal foodie treats or taking the kids to enjoy all the fun of the fair. Here’s a little taster of what’s on in London until 2016.
Officially one of the most Christmassy spots in London at this time of year, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is an almost overwhelming collection of activities and entertainment that is perfect for everyone from families to couples and even work Christmas parties. There are no less than two circuses within the Wonderland this year, as well as the Magical Ice Kingdom, an observation wheel, a huge ice rink and a number of bars to keep the festive spirit flowing.
For the hipster version of Winter Wonderland, head to Winterville, which offers festive treats galore from a corner of Victoria Park. This year Winterville is hosting the Winter Night Garden with special showings of super Christmassy films such as 'The Muppet Christmas Carol' and 'Love Actually' and there are circus performers from The Moscow State Circus and African Whirlwind, as well as wide range of different places to eat, drink and be very merry.
Southbank Centre Winter Festival
Every year all the fun of a festive Christmas market comes to the Southbank at the Winter Festival with wooden huts selling spiced cider, festive food and drink, as well as roller-skating and spectacular performances. One of the highlights this year is The Choir with No Name, made up of people experiencing homelessness and on the edges of society, and there’s also a vintage themed New Year’s Eve party with a fantastic view of the fireworks.
What better festive experience could there be than flying round an ice rink pink cheeked in the frosty air. In London, there are plenty of places to do this, from Somerset House to Canary Wharf, Hampton Court Palace and under the London Eye.
Shows for kids
London theatre absolutely comes into its own in December and over Christmas, with shows for all ages, tastes and occasions. Try a seasonal pantomime or some of the most recent additions to the theatre landscape, from Robin Hood to Beauty and the Beast and Around the World in 80 Days
