Gerald and Ginty Stecker believed that their beloved Victorian mansion in Loughton would be where they would spend their retirement years, happily enjoying the rich character of the building with features such as high ceilings and typical Victorian architecture. But it was the stunning forest views that gave the couple reason to feel that they would never find anything else to match their home.
'As you get older, having a view is something that you really treasure and one that we wouldn't compromise over,' explains Mr Stecker. 'Although we fancied trying a completely different property type for a fresh start, we honestly never thought we would find anything that could rival what we had in Loughton.'
The couple have lived in the area for a long time and have been aware of Higgins Homes' excellent reputation. So when they heard about a new development, Ashbee Lodge in Chigwell, they were keen to take a look. 'The first thing that struck me was the exterior of the property,' says Mr Stecker. 'It was really unlike anything I've seen before; a stylish mix of art nouveau, traditional and contemporary. As you would expect from Higgins, the fittings are first class but the one thing that really sold it for us was the stunning view our apartment has over the golf course.' The couple's first floor two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with balcony looks over a lush golf course and ensures that the view will remain protected and enjoyed for years to come. 'We knew that we wanted to have the apartment immediately when we saw the stunning view that we could enjoy from the balcony,' says Mr Stecker.
The convenience of Ashbee Lodge's location was also something that greatly appealed to the couple. 'We are just a short stroll away from a delightful parade of shops with a pharmacy, bank, Post Office, bakers, deli, flower shop, barbers, boutiques, restaurant and library, which gives the area a lovely community feel and makes for very easy living. Chigwell tube station is just a minute walk away, which gives us easy access into London for when we want to enjoy the Capital,' he adds.
Just a few miles away from Ashbee Lodge is the ancient landscape of Epping Forest, with its 6,000 acres of unspoilt countryside, which allows residents to enjoy the best of both worlds by being easily accessible to both the country and town. Notable restaurants near Ashbee Lodge include The Bluebell, located in the heart of Chigwell, which represents the finest in modern British and European cuisine, and Sheesh, a family run restaurant owned by Chigwell resident Lord Alan Sugar's company. Built in the Arts and Crafts style, so prevalent in the area, Ashbee Lodge features tall chimneys, pitch tiled and dormer roofs and is surrounded by lush, tree-fringed gardens. There are a few two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments remaining, although only one with golf course views, with prices from £700k to £750k.
