Bernard Poppy has spent many days over the last 50 years walking past a building on Vicarage Lane, lately wondering why it had become deserted and what other use it could possibly have.
It was only very recently when the builders moved in, did Mr Poppy find out that this Victorian coach house was to be converted into a contemporary three-bedroom home.
“I always really liked the building and when I saw that it was to be redeveloped, my interest in it really sparked,” explains Mr Poppy. “As a former property developer of converted buildings, I was really keen to see how it would turn out and when we saw the plans, we just couldn’t resist.”
The Victorian coach house has been sensitively converted into a thoroughly modern living space, blending brick and weatherboard to create an architecturally stunning new property.
The three-bedroom home situated in the exclusive Essex village of Chigwell, is part of a development of three, four and six-bedroom detached houses built by Higgins Homes. The luxurious new gathering of houses at The Cavendish Collection is an elegant cluster of five beautifully refined detached homes, offering the best of village life with countryside views.
“Myself and my wife Sylvia weren’t particularly looking to move into a converted property, but this one is just so unusual and can provide so much space, including a lovely garden, that it is just perfect for us,” explains Mr Poppy. “We are currently researching its history, which will really bring it to life for us.”
The sensitive conversion of the property and the excellent craftsmanship from Higgins Homes has been particularly pleasing for Mr Poppy as he explains: “Since the 1980s I have worked on lots of conversions but I’ve been very impressed with Higgins Homes. They use really expensive material, which provides an excellent finish and everything is done really properly without skimping on any part of the process.”
The couple have lived in the area all their life and describe it as very unique. “It’s a more gentle pace of life in this part of Essex, even the traffic is calmer, which certainly makes is a lovely place to retire to,” says Mr Poppy.
The Coach House is a large single-storey arrangement, with a ground floor comprising a spacious open-plan living area, family bathroom and two bedrooms – including a master suite with private dressing room and shower room. A third bedroom gets the first floor all to itself. There is an enclosed garden with shingled and decked areas and private gated parking area.
Other properties in the development include elegant, newly built six-bedroom, double fronted properties arranged over three floors.
The Cavendish Collection reflects Chigwell’s rich and varied history, while combining the best of affluent village living with a vibrant and exciting centre. Although a peaceful location, Chigwell can also boast an array of designer boutiques, cosmopolitan restaurants and elegant coffee shops. It is also ideal for the commuter, having an underground station, which provides direct access to Central London in around 30 minutes.
