Area Spotlight- London Borough of Newham

Posted: 30 August 2018 by Higgins Homes

Five miles east of the City of London and located in one of the most vibrant parts of the Capital, the London Borough of Newham has a lot to offer those looking for a location to live.

As one of the six host areas for the 2012 London Olympics, Newham contains the Olympic Park, including the London Stadium, and also has its own directly elected mayor.

If you’re seeking an exciting lifestyle, this is a prime location to consider.

Alternative activities

  • Theatre Royal Stratford East. During the 50s and 60s this was one of the most influential theatres in London and its pioneering artistic spirit remains to this day.

  • All Star Lanes, Westfield Stratford City is all about bowling and burgers in a vintage style setting.

  • Roof East. Slug it out by swinging your stress away inside London’s only baseball batting cage or try your hand at bowls one evening or weekend on this funky rooftop bar.

  • ArcelorMittal Orbit – you can see this curved red structure from miles across London but it’s in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park that you can actually climb it for spectacular London views and take the 178 metre long slide down.

  • ZAPspace trampoline park has everything from dodgeball courts, foam pits and drop slides to fitness sessions.

Green space

Despite being a pretty urban party of the city, green spaces are easy to find in Newham.

The most notable, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, offers a mixture of parkland, playgrounds, walkways and cycle paths. Threaded with the River Lee, it’s perfect for those who prefer their open space with a bit more wildlife as well as the chance to spot art and sculptures while you explore.

History and culture

Newham has its fair share of fascinating history and is a great place to explore some of the city’s heritage and architecture, via buildings such as West Ham Church and the Grade I listed 18th century tidal mill, The House Mill.

Active Lifestyle

Given its recent Olympic history, it’s no surprise that Newham houses some spectacular sporting facilities. The London Aquatics Centre is located here with its three pools and dry-land dive-training area, plus a Better Gym. In addition, the Copper Box Arena is the place to go if you want to watch major sporting events or simply enjoy the gym and fitness facilities available.

If you want to try something different, Lee Valley Velopark gives you the chance to jump on your bike and take either a cycle round the track, or go off road with the mountain or BMX trial options. If cycling isn’t the sport of choice, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre gives those in the group an alternative option.

Eat & Drink

Like many other multicultural areas of London, Newham is a mouthwatering mix of different tastes and cuisines, from champagne bars serving artisan charcuterie and cheese boards, to classic Italian food. Visit the world-famous Formans for their renowned smoked salmon and enjoy watching the chefs at work in the viewing gallery of the smoke-house.

For those who love a rustic bakery with fantastic coffee, Signorelli Bakery in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the place to go. However, if you’re more of a vegetable fan and prefer the healthy option, Ted’s Veg is a great place to get your own fresh produce.

The area also offers a range of drinking spots, including Print House, which has draught beers, cocktails and its own club nights, or Crate Brewery which offers craft beer from the on-site brewery which also offers tasting tours.

Getting around

This part of London is very well connected to the rest of London, with Central, Jubilee and DLR lines in addition to TFL Rail and National Rail all going through Stratford.  The area is also due to benefit from Crossrail when it arrives in 2019.

A second station, Stratford International, has Southeastern connections and high-speed connections to St Pancras International and Eurostar.

If you’re considering this part of London, Newham has a lot to offer for every lifestyle. The New Stratford Works development is perfectly placed to make the most of Newham, as well as the rest of London.
