We’re finally into the really good part of the summer, with heatwaves on the horizon and (most of the time) even when it rains it’s still warm. If your interiors are still rather wintry and you want to give them a summertime overhaul, without spending an absolute fortune, then accessories are the way to do it. Take a look through our list of top home accessories to give your home some serious summer style.
We tend not to notice lampshades – mainly because most of us opt for very boring colour and neutral styles - but we certainly pick up on the glow that they cast on the space in which they sit. For summer, choose a rosy shade that will cast a cheerful glow – pinks, oranges and yellows will help to bring the sunshine outside, in. If you want to make a summer statement with your shade then pretty florals are a great choice.
Cushions, coverings and throws
It’s not practical for most of us to change our furniture with the seasons but you can easily update the fabrics. Switch out dark colors, velvets and tweeds for light cottons, linens and chiffons, pastel colours and thoroughly summery prints. Bunting print eiderdowns have a wonderfully summer fete feel to them or opt for some fun cake prints in edible pastels if you’re starting to feel the Great British Bake Off vibes.
Door handles and knobs
It’s amazing how many times a day we look at door handles, which means there’s lots of potential there for making us feel full of summer sun. Replace your dull door handles with brightly polished copper knobs, glass handles that will send sunlight skittering around the room or retro colourful designs. Match them to the theme of the summer accessories you’re putting throughout the rest of the room (nautical/fete/beach/country garden) or make them a stand out piece.
Go for glass
Whether you’re accessorizing your dining table or looking for new ornaments for the shelves, glass is a great choice for the summer months, as it has a fresh feel to it and sunshine will light it up. Coloured glass jugs, vintage style coloured glass candy bowls and giant glass fruit bowls filled with fruit in a contrasting shade can really bring a room to life.
Introduce a mirror
There’s no better way to make a room feel summery than by clever mirror placement. Put your mirror opposite a natural light source and it will reflect all that lovely sunshine back into the room, lighting up all your other summer accessories and keeping the winter blues at bay.
