The Spring Cleaning Guide

spring cleaning

The sun is out, the sky is blue – there’s still a little bit of a chill in the air but there’s no questioning the fact that spring has definitely sprung. At this time of year it’s traditional to give your home a good spring clean, to clear out all the dust and darkness of winter and throw open the windows to the (hopefully) warmer weather. It’s also a good idea to give your home a good clean in April as the sun really highlights dusty floors, dirty windows and fabrics that have seen better days. Below are some tips on how to get your spring clean 2015 under way:

Deep clean your carpets – it’s amazing the difference that a professionally cleaned carpet can make to your rooms. You can either call in the professionals to do this for you or hire a machine yourself but either way, a deep cleaned carpet will feel almost like new.

Curtains and drapes – your curtains may be dusty enough to wash, in which case check the washing instructions and then put them through the machine or take them to a local dry cleaner. If they don’t really require a proper clean then take the hoover (with attachment) to them instead.

De-clutter – this is an essential part of a spring clean as the more ‘stuff’ you have cluttering up your home the more opportunity there is for dust to settle. Go through all your cupboards and drawers, old boxes, the loft and get rid of anything that doesn’t have a purpose. Limit the number of items you keep for sentimental value and get rid of anything in your rooms that looks out of place or that disrupts the room’s flow. Try selling on eBay or have a yard sale if you want to raise some cash at the same time.

Don’t forget the details – as the sun shows up every speck of dust your spring clean needs to be really thorough. Don’t forget the harder to reach areas and those that are less obvious, such as skirting boards, door handles, door-frames and top shelves.

Wardrobe transformation – now is the time to start putting away winter coats and thick jumpers and getting your wardrobe summer ready. Start by cleaning out the wardrobe and then packing away winter clothes – get coats dry cleaned, store jumpers with scented drawer liners or moth protection and use this as an opportunity to give away anything that you haven’t worn for two seasons or more.

Although a spring clean might seem like a chore it can also be a great opportunity to embrace the coming warmer weather and get ready for summer.
