Downsizing trend gives reason to move to Arboretum

According to research by Lloyds Bank1, 52% of those looking to move are considering downsizing, as it continues to be the main reason to sell a home. The main reason for downsizing was financial, with 40% of movers believing their new property would reduce bills. A further 28% wanted to release equity from their home and 25% wanted to support their retirement plans. One such couple following this trend was retired husband and wife Barbara, 73, and David Bullman, 72.

Having lived in Basildon in a large 4 bedroom detached house for many years, Barbara and David decided that it was time to downsize and move closer to two of their daughters and grandchildren. The couple decided to buy off-plan their two bedroom apartment at Higgins Home’s Arboretum development in Epping.

Barbara, who previously worked as a secretary in Basildon, comments: “We purchased a two bed apartment which was a big downsize for us as we used to live in a much bigger home. We just wanted a change of environment, far less maintenance and most importantly, wanted to be nearer to two of our daughters and our two youngest grandchildren who live in Loughton.                                                        

With the tube on the doorstep it is really easy to pop on the central line to see our family whenever we want. Coming from a larger house with a spacious garden, we wanted to make sure we had some outside access; having all these features available at Arboretum was a huge factor for us.”

Location was a key aspect in the couple’s property search and having discovered Arboretum, they both agreed Epping was the perfect place to live for a number of reasons. Barbara continues: “We decided to move to Arboretum in particular because of its incredible location in comparison to other developments. It’s got everything around us that we could need; Epping is a lovely area and the town centre is only down the road with plenty of shops and greenery, having the station so near to Arboretum was the winner for us.”

Barbara comments: “This is our third new build within 30 years so we have had our share of experience. There’s also the security with a new build home that you receive a 10 year building warranty, which means that all damages and defects are taken care of.”

Since the launch of Arboretum, the large scale development is already 75% sold and, once complete, will comprise of 149 new homes ranging from two bedroom apartments to three, four and five bedroom houses. Whether a first time buyer, starter family or early downsizer, the various apartment types and house designs provide something for everyone.

Spanning a total of 3.6 hectares and surrounded by ancient woodlands, the development will also include 1.8 hectares of open green space and a landscaped garden square. Just a ten to fifteen minute walk from the development, Epping underground station runs regular central line services to Liverpool Street in just 37 minutes and to Oxford Circus in no more than 47 minutes. The nearby M11 and M25 motorways also provide an easy route to surrounding the towns and greater London.
