Spanning a total of 1,338 sq mi the county of Essex is far larger than many people realise. It borders with Cambridge to the north, Hertfordshire to the west, Kent across the estuary of the River Thames and London to the southwest. The result is a fantastically diverse offering of geography and heritage. Its county town is Chelmsford, which is also the only city, and is itself a popular choice of residence for many people who commute to London and still want to live in an urban setting.

However, one of Essex's crowning jewels is its vast expanse of open countryside, dotted with towns and villages that give residents the quintessential rural lifestyle without ever being too far from civilisation – not least a stone's throw from the capital. Perhaps the most well known green spot in the county is Epping Forest. Covering over 6,000 acres, this historic ground has been named a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

It is a wonderfully versatile place that accommodates countless outdoor activities and acts as a barrier to the further spread of London. The nearby town of Epping is home to one of our current developments, arboretum. This is a stunning new community of various properties, radiating out from a formal garden square in the heart of the town. Another of Essex's fine towns is Chigwell combining affluent village living with a vibrant and stimulating centre full of fine dining, boutique shopping and chic café culture. For green surroundings right on the doorstep of the capital, look no further than Buckhurst Hill. This suburban village sits in close proximity to several woodland areas and is one of the three points of Essex's desirable 'Golden Triangle.'

Essex has a strong infrastructure, including Stansted Airport and many rail links to London and other surrounding counties. It also has the Thames estuary, making its eastern border predominantly coastline. n short, it has everything to offer, whatever your preferences. It is also a sterling location for property investment due to its continually rising popularity.

If you are considering a move to Essex then Higgins Homes has several developments that include a wide range of properties from two-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom houses; all of which are finished to the very highest standards.
