Exterior Upgrades Improving Your Curb Appeal

While there is truth in the old adage 'don't judge a book by its cover', there is also a lot to be said for first impressions. Which is why taking good care of your home's exterior is just as important as its interior. Here are some simple ways to improve your curb appeal aesthetically, financially and practically.

Setting the Boundaries Humans are naturally territorial. So mark your space in style by replacing or painting old fences, planting bushes and trees, and creating privacy with a gated driveway. Boundaries frame your property so keeping them well maintained will set the standard for everything else.

Landscape the Garden Treat your outside spaces as you would any other room in your home. Think about the function: Would you like to entertain outdoors? Do you have any children in need of a play area? Is there a particular suntrap? Do you want to grow your own food? Then plan the design around those functions. It doesn't matter how large or small your garden is, you can make the most of it through good design. The most important thing is to keep it neat and tidy, so consider low maintenance options if you aren't the green-fingered type.

Windows and Doors It is easy to forget that windows and doors are seen on the outside as well as the inside. Being exposed to the elements inevitably results in faded paint and splitting wood, not to mention the dirt. If you have wooden frames, sand them down then give them a coat of fresh paint. Be sure to use products for exterior as they are far more robust and provide better protection. Find a local window cleaner to come and give them a good clean once a month too.

Paths and Driveways Use a high-pressure water hose and a good dose of weed killer to blast new life into dishevelled looking paths and driveways. If it's time for an upgrade then consider alternatives to tarmac, such as gravel and paving, to give your driveway a little more character and style. Placing some potted plants and hanging baskets around the door makes any house look more like a home.
