Down Time at Home the Perfect Alternative to a Holiday

Days off are a precious commodity to say the least. Yet after working so many hours week after week, our usual response to the word 'holiday' is to get as far away from home as possible. But what if you were to use that time to actually enjoy the space you worked so hard to have?

The UK may not have a reputation for beach weather, but there is something incredibly comforting if not inspiring about spending time indoors on a rainy day. There is not a house in existence without a to-do list attached to it, and working through that list may not be the arduous process you assume it to be.

Taking pride in your home allows you to enjoy it all the more whilst simultaneously adding value to its selling price. Getting stuck into a bit of DIY or some much needed Feng Shui will truly take your mind off work whilst adding to your skill set. Physical labour is the ideal remedy for a tired mind and a body itching to exert itself after weeks of sitting in an office. The results are instantaneous and satisfying: an investment in your home and wellbeing. You can even get your family involved, working together to create your ideal home. Or simply do it alone and reap the rewards by admiring your handy work.

Alternatively you may want to use the time you have to simply do nothing at all. It is rare that we find moments of stillness and reflection, even more so in our humble abodes. Yet the more you allow yourself to have there, the more peaceful and positive your environment will feel when you do come back from a hard day at work and want to unwind. Take long baths, have lazy mornings, sit and read or watch a film.

Think of all those things you want to learn or create but never seem to have time to do. Reawaken your imagination and make something from scratch, on your own or with your family and friends. Have fun and get messy. It is amazing how uptight we can become about keeping things neat and tidy when our minds are craving quite the opposite. Reinvent the space and claim it as your own; inject positivity into your home.

If you are lucky enough to have a garden or outside space of any kind then use it. Whether that means getting green-fingered and replanting the flowerbeds, weeding and mowing the lawn, digging out a vegetable plot, or just sitting in the sun. Make the most of your own little patch of earth and again it will fill you with pride and satisfaction whilst boosting the value of your property.

It doesn't have to be Spring to have a major clear out. If you find yourself with several days off then why not do some life laundry. Going through old possessions not only reconnects us with forgotten treasures, it helps to put the past behind us and make way for pastures new. The busier we are, the less time we have to keep on top of things, letting them accumulate and stagnate. You may find a couple of things you can sell for a bit of unexpected cash.

Getting domesticated can really strengthen your bond with your property as well as those you share it with. Invite friends over for dinner or morning coffee. Do some baking with your children or learn to cook something new and stock up the freezer with interesting lunches for when you go back to work. If culinary skills aren't your thing then treat yourself to a couple of takeaways with a film or some good old-fashioned board games. Find your inner child and make your home your own personal playground. If you have children, remember what you loved to do at their age and do it with them. If you need some alone time then ask a friend or relative to take care of them for a couple of days so you can relax uninterrupted and find your feet again.

All these things are both cost effective and satisfying, and all the more enjoyable in a good home.
